ABOUT tHE wEATHER:
wEATHER dEFINITION:According to our textbooks:
"Weather is the word used to describe the state of the atmosphere at any particular time and place. Weather conditions can change every day and can vary over short distances." |
More about the weather:The study of weather is called METEOROLOGY and it is studied by people called METEOROLOGISTS. It involves measuring elements of weather at least once a day. These elements will be explained in further detail by us on other pages on this website and they include:
|
Weather ForecastsA WEATHER FORECAST is something that predicts what the weather is going to be for a particular place. WEATHER FORECASTS are created by METEOROLOGISTS from information that they collect from numerous different sources. These sources include: satellites, radar stations, gas rigs, shipping and WEATHER STATIONS.
The organisation in Ireland that employs METEOROLOGISTS and collects this type of data in order to create WEATHER FORECASTS for us is known as MET EIREANN. We receive this information from them through the tv, newspaper, radio and our internet phones. |
Weather Stations:
A weather station consists of land based instruments and equipment used to measure the 6 elements of the weather that will be discussed in more detail on the relevant pages of this website. The readings are taken hourly and used to create WEATHER FORECASTS. Met Éireann has many stations.

What is the importance of weather forecasts?
WEATHER FORECASTS are important to us for our daily lives as we need to know so that we can deal with the weather we have to go out in, for example bringing a rain jacket if it is predicted to rain later that day. People also need to know as it can affect their jobs, for example farmers, fishermen and pilots. It is also important for recreational purposes; for example if you want to see if the a pitch will be playable for a field sport game or if you are a surfer and you want to see if there will be good waves tomorrow.
